Being in origin a military institution, the public side of the Museum’s activities is administered by the Friends of the Tank Museum, a non-profit making organisation as defined by the Statute of 1901.

In 1965, the Documentation Centre of armor gear is created by the Ministry of Defence. Its mission is to collect, conserve, restore and present in the Museum of armor, french and foreign equipment offering a historical, technical and educational interest. Its action methodically continued the gradual adjustment of the rooms in the museum with the help of local (Region des Pays de la Loire, Department of Maine-et-Loire, Ville de Saumur).
