In analysing the limited success of the heavy tanks, General Estienne came up with the idea of a smaller tracked vehicle, relatively agile and easy to build. The Renault FT17 went into service during the summer of 1918, just in time to play a decisive role in the final victory.

Engine Power : 35 bhp
Max Road Speed : 7.5 kph over 35 kilometres
Armour : 22 mm
Armament : 1 x 37mm SA18 cannon
1 x Hotchkiss 8mm machine-gun
4000 units built in several different versions. It was still in service in 1940!
